Home Moving – Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Binding estimate?

Under this pricing option, the move must occur within 60 days of the estimate. The charges are based upon the estimated weight and services noted on the estimate. Any additional destination or other charges that are not covered in the original estimate may be collected.

What is a Not to Exceed estimate?

This is the highest price that can be charged to you based on your written estimate, plus any additional charges based on a signed Change Order for the move. The Not to Exceed price must be signed by both you and DMS.

What are my options for protection against loss or damage to my shipment?

Valuation refers to the amount of liability that Atlas assumes, and, therefore, the amount you may receive if an item is lost or damaged while in the care of your Atlas Agent. Customers have the option to go with basic coverage which is 60 cents per pound, or they also have the option to go with the coverage that must be purchased. The extra valuation option is at an additional cost based on the weight of their goods. They have three options in that case, $0 deductible, $250 or $500 deductible. The amount of coverage required is based on the weight of your shipment.

How far in advance do I have to schedule my move or delivery out of storage?

We usually ask that you call 2 weeks in advance to schedule your move dates or delivery out of storage. However, during our busiest months (may-September) as much notice possible helps to ensure we can give you the dates you need for your move.

Do you deliver on Saturday?

Yes, however this will be considered overtime and there will be an extra charge. If however, we cannot deliver your goods on a weekday and Saturday or Sunday delivery is the only option, we will waive the charge.

What should I do with my pets while the movers are here?

Because there will be a lot of activity around your home at the time of your move, it is best to keep pets in a secure and safe area. A room that is cleared out or their crate provides them their own space. If the weather is permissible, letting dogs run around in a fenced-in yard also works. Cats tend to be curious so please keep them in a safe part of the house where their curiosity won’t get them into trouble.

Will I have the same driver from origin to destination?

We try to keep the same crew on each move for origin and destination. Sometimes, due to unforeseen circumstances, the driver will need to be changed but we will notify you of this before delivery. Usually a change in crew will happen in order to keep your delivery on schedule or if the original driver has an emergency that prohibits him from being able to deliver.

Does the driver pack my goods or is it other people that do the packing?

The driver and his crew members will do the packing of your goods. The crew leader oversees the crew and takes inventory as things are packed and loaded onto the truck.

Will the driver call me before he shows up at my house?

Yes, the day before your move, you will receive a call notifying you of your driver and the time they will be arriving at your house. The driver will also call you before your delivery to notify you when they will be arriving to deliver your goods.

Can you move food and wine?

We can move non-perishable food. Depending on how far you are moving, wine can be moved; however the temperature in the trailer can get very warm or cold depending on where the truck is traveling. If you would like wine transported, a waiver will have to be signed that states if the wine spoils, DMS is not liable.
